Anth’s Story of Success

Anth’s Story of Success

Anth was diagnosed with a grade 2/3 Benign Pineal Parenchyma Tumour in 2013. After 4 neurosurgeries including a 14.5 hour surgery and 33 rounds of radiotherapy and intensive rehabilitation. The tumour had left Anth having to learn how to walk again and his fine motor skills were significantly impaired. After 5 years Anth was left with left sided weakness, tremors, double vision, anxiety and depression.

Anth attended the Momentum Skills vocational programme in February 2018 after successfully gaining distinctions overall in his Health Science Access course through Sunderland College. Anth had already applied for University before commencing on the vocational programme however he was awaiting interviews for his chosen course (BSC Physiotherapy).

Anth initially attended the 12 week vocational programme where he developed skills such as confidence, motivation and  independence as well as meeting with other individuals who had suffered a brain injury. These sessions increased and developed Anth’s confidence and his belief in himself.

Looking back Anth stated

"Don’t compare yourself to others it doesn’t do your mental or physical health any good, your mind and body knows when it’s time to move on and it takes as long as it takes. Don’t rush it. It’s all done in your own time."

Anth was initially very apprehensive due to his anxiety but through attending Momentum Skills his communication skills rapidly developed and he formed a close bond with those on the programme and staff.  During his time with Momentum Skills Anth developed strategies with relaxation and mindfulness to support with his anxiety, working with staff to ensure the strategies he had developed were implemented to assist Anth in gaining independence.

Week by week Anth’s skills and confidence grew and Anth was confident enough to deliver an individual presentation on his future career to the group and staff. During his time on the vocational programme Anth always looked to the future rather than letting his disabilities get in the way and was focused on his dream of “helping others and to give something back”.

Anth worked closely with his job coach to prepare himself for university interviews as well as the planning required for going to university. His job coach spent time with Anth reassuring him and assisted with all aspects from budget planning, researching accommodation, applying for student finance as well as applying for student support. Anth was accepted with an unconditional offer at Teesside University to study Physiotherapy.  Anth was determined to achieve his dream of studying at university and ensured every hurdle he came across was overcome.

“I wouldn’t have been able to achieve my dream without the support of the Momentum Staff. They helped arrange additional support, attend appointments and were always there if I had a problem. They encouraged me to achieve dreams and fought my corner when it came to disabilities. Without attending the vocational programme my dreams of going to university would not have been possible.  The staff are very friendly and approachable and always willing to help you!”

Anth has now enrolled onto the BSc Physiotherapy course at Teesside Univeristy, and we wish him all the best for his future!
