The Money Matters Project

The Money Matters Project has been developed by Momentum and The National Lottery Community Fund to improve financial literacy, money management skills and access to financial opportunities and benefits.

The Money Matters Project is for those with a brain injury or neurological condition and their families and carers living in the Scottish Borders. There are further projects in the Scottish Borders which support those with a brain injury. Check out the Borders Brain Injury Service here.

The Money Matters Project is divided into three stages. You can take part in any or all of the stages and you chose the part that meets your personal needs.

Stage 1: Help to maximise the household or individual’s income and apply for any benefits or grants that they may be eligible for. This also includes managing changes and renewals to existing benefit awards and help to negotiate the Government’s Welfare Reform programme.

Stage 2: Participation in group workshops and one-to-one meetings providing information, advice and support to improve money management skills, improve budgeting proficiency and reduce outgoings. This is tailored to each person’s individual needs and will differ according to the amount and level of assistance needed.

Stage 3: Ongoing support to help with changes to benefits and money management skills as required. Appropriate referrals from all other agencies and self-referrals are accepted.

Benefits that the Money Matters Project can support you to claim include:

•Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
•Personal Independent Payment (PIP)
•Employment and Support Allowance
•Carers Allowance
•Income Support
•Jobseekers Allowance
•Working and Child Tax Credits
•Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reductions

Some of the topics covered in stage two are:

•Understanding the benefit system
•Knowing your utilities
•Shopping for the best value
•Managing your debts
